Surface Types

There are various ground designs for underneath the different play equipment. The DIN EN 1177 specifies the type of ground which should be used all which depends on the maximal fall height. The following surface materials are available:

1. If concrete or concrete-similar building materials is used, then these are subject to the DIN 1045. Since concrete forms a very hard surface, this is only suitable for surfaces for smaller construction parts.

2. From the term bitumen surfaces, one understands a mixture of minerals and asphalt cement. Its production and processing is subject to the DIN 18317, DIN 18354 and DIN 18560. Additionally, ZTV bit and ZTV min can be used.

3. Topsoil offers has better absorption characteristics than the first two surface types. It is subject to the DIN 18915 Part 1. The topsoil is the freshest layer of an invigorated surface which results from physical, chemical and biological procedures. It is suitable for vegetation-technical purposes particularly and contains roots and seeds for plants which are typical for the location.

4. Water-bound covers. These interfaces are registered in DIN 18035 Part 5. Interfaces are water-permeable, multi-level surfaces made up of mineral grain mixtures without additional cement (e.g. park paths).

5. The lawn is subject to DIN 18917. It must be taken into consideration that grass can quickly diminish through use, therefore reducing the protection level for possible falls.

6. Synthetic Fall Protection consists of recycled plastic with HIC examination as criterion for head injuries.

7. Washed sand should be without silt and/or argillaceous pieces. Grain size from 0.2 to 2 mm are required.

8. Gravel must be round and washed with a grain size from 2 mm to 8 mm.

9. Wood chippings, consist of mechanically cut up wood (no timber materials) without bark and parts of leaves. The grain size lies between 5 mm and 50 mm. Pieper Holz supplies bark-free wood chippings which are tested by TÜV. This must be appropriately thickly built into the different falling heights. Please inquire.

10. Bark mulch is cut up bark from resinous woods with a grain size from 20 mm to 80 mm.
